Making 808s that survive a phone speaker

Your sub sounds enormous on headphones and vanishes on a laptop. Here is why, and what to do about it without ruining the low end.


You spend an hour getting the 808 to sit right. It is deep, it is round, it rattles the desk. Then you send it to a friend, they play it on their phone, and the low end is simply not there.

This is not a mixing mistake. It is physics — but there is a well-worn trick around it.

Why the sub disappears

A phone speaker is a few millimetres across. It physically cannot move enough air to reproduce a 40Hz tone. Most laptop speakers roll off steeply below around 200Hz; small Bluetooth speakers are not much better.

So if your 808 is a pure sine wave at 40Hz, a phone has nothing to play. It is not quiet — it is absent.

The trick: give it harmonics

Here is the useful part. Human hearing reconstructs a missing fundamental. If you play the harmonics of a 40Hz note — 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz — but not the 40Hz itself, your brain still perceives a note at 40Hz. It infers the root from the pattern of overtones above it.

That is why a good 808 sounds present on a phone. The phone is not playing the sub at all. It is playing the harmonics, and your ear is supplying the rest.

So the goal is not to remove low end. It is to make sure there is something happening above the low end that implies it.

Ways to add harmonics

Saturation or distortion. The standard approach. Drive generates harmonics at multiples of the fundamental, exactly what you need. Use it in parallel — keep the clean sub, blend a distorted copy underneath until the note reads on a small speaker.

A layered click or transient. A short mid-range click at the attack gives the ear something to latch onto and defines the note’s timing even when the body of it is inaudible. Almost every 808 in commercial music has one.

A harmonic layer. Duplicate the 808 an octave up, filter it, tuck it quietly under the original. Crude, effective, very hard to hear as a separate element.

Check it on the worst speaker you own

The most valuable monitoring tool in your setup is the cheapest speaker in your house. Not because it sounds good — because it is what most people will hear the track on.

A practical routine:

  1. Mix on whatever you normally use.
  2. Play it back on your phone speaker at arm’s length.
  3. If the bassline melody is still followable, you are fine. If the low notes turn into vague thuds with no pitch, add harmonics and try again.

That second step catches more problems than any analyser.

Don’t overcorrect

The failure mode on the other side is a track that sounds great on a phone and thin on anything with a real woofer. If you find yourself high-passing the 808 at 80Hz to “make it translate”, stop. You have not solved the problem, you have moved it.

Keep the sub. Add the harmonics on top. Both audiences get what their speakers can actually deliver.

Tuning matters more than you think

One last thing that gets skipped. An 808 is a pitched instrument, and if it is not in the key of the track, no amount of saturation will save it. On a small speaker especially — where the ear is reconstructing the note from harmonics — a slightly out-of-tune sub reads as wrong rather than as low.

Tune the 808 to the root of the key first. Then worry about how it translates.
